Tilapia Breeding Program Specialist (1 Position)

Background

WorldFish is hiring for a new aquaculture and nutrition intervention with the USAID Bangladesh Feed the Future Zone of Influence. The new activity will take a market systems approach, stimulating growth of the private-sector to deliver goods and services to the aquaculture sector in south-west Bangladesh, thereby ensuring the sustainability of investments. A key component of the proposal is to assemble a team with experience of applying market systems approaches in development projects.

Key Responsibilities

Provide short and long-term technical guidance, business counselling, and support to GIFT tilapia hatcheries, entrepreneurs, associations for sustainable development of Tilapia business
Strengthen WorldFish supported tilapia breeding  nucleus (TBN) program and monitor overall activities of GIFT program
Monitor overall activities and improve GIFT seed production and distribution system in project supported TSHs in the Feed the Future ZOI
Assist feasibility analysis and business planning for TBNs to adopt a branding strategy
Enable cooperative environment between breeders (TBNs), multipliers (hatcheries and brood stock pond owners), both men and women grow out farmers to deliver quality seed at scale and affordable prices.
Facilitate pilot test a scalable model of brand and co-brand and management with a limited number of TBNs willing to invest in their own brand. Organize local, regional and national training, workshops and cross-visits for tilapia business entities
Facilitate distributing/marketing and dissemination of improved GIFT germplasm /seeds among the multiplier hatcheries
Develop linkages among private companies, exporters, research organizations, DoF and Tilapia farmers organizations
Assist to develop intensive tilapia farming models and linkage with different export market actors especially with processors and buyers
Assist to facilitate the process of  conducting different surveys, performance assessments, impact studies and capacity building programs related to tilapia
Develop training, research, marketing and communications materials  related to tilapia breeding, farming and sales
Prepare monthly, quarterly and other reports as necessary and submit to project management
Perform as one of the key members of the proposed fish research platform based at Jessore hub linked to Fish CRP

  

Five years of experience in fish breeding with a strong background in conducting training.
At least MSc degree from any recognized university in Fisheries or aquaculture or related discipline.
Detailed and diverse knowledge in GIFT tilapia breeding methods and brood development programs
Demonstrated experience and technical knowledge in GIFT tilapia or carp hatchery operation and management
Vast knowledge and understanding of the tilapia market value chain including hatcheries, nurseries, fry traders, brood suppliers, fish growers and input suppliers
A natural interest in making visits to field, partner organizations and associated stakeholders
Experiences with carp and tilapia hatchery operation and management, basic knowledge in fish genetics
Proficient in MS office, Excel, PowerPoint, outlook to support effective written and oral communication in English

Desired Skills and Qualification

On-farm research experience of tilapia seed and brood development
Conceptual understanding of the environment and market systems approach
Ability to work independently, under pressure and with minimum supervision
Motorcycle driving license
Excellent interpersonal skills
Salary and Benefits

This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position with annual salary ranging between BDT 1,213,305 to BDT 1,249,704 per annum.

WorldFish's NRS shall receive comprehensive benefits including (but not limited to) insurance coverage for staff and eligible dependents, and pension / provident fund contribution.

Our offer

This position will be based at WorldFish’s country office in ZOI/Dhaka, Bangladesh with extensive field visit. Only shortlisted candidate will be notified and expected to attend the interview. The successful candidate should be available to commence in September 2018 for an initial of two and half (2 ½) years contract, with the possibility of contract renewal depending on performance and funding situation.
